The Mullahs Thought They Could Cheat Their Way Through the Ceasefire

Trump Just Made Clear That Game Is Over

President Trump declared the interim agreement with Iran finished after Tehran’s latest round of aggression. The mullahs violated the deal they signed weeks ago, attacked commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and then struck U.S. positions in the Gulf. Trump did not hesitate. American forces hit back with precision strikes on Iranian military targets, and the president made his contempt plain at the NATO summit.

This is not negotiation theater anymore. The regime in Tehran tested the limits one time too many. The next phase of this conflict is already underway.

The Islamabad Memorandum and Its Fragile Terms

In mid-June 2026, the United States and Iran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. It was an interim ceasefire framework meant to stop active fighting that had raged since U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets began in late February. The deal called for an immediate end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. It required Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to commercial traffic without tolls or interference for sixty days. The United States agreed to lift its naval blockade within thirty days. Both sides committed to sixty days of negotiations toward a final agreement covering Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief.

The document included a reaffirmation by Iran that it would not develop or acquire nuclear weapons. It was never a full peace treaty. It was a test. Trump made clear from the start that any violation would end the arrangement. The regime failed that test almost immediately.

Iran’s Overt Violations

Iran’s actions since the ink dried on the MOU tell the real story. Within days, Iranian Revolutionary Guard naval forces targeted commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Multiple tankers came under attack, including incidents in late June and a fresh barrage on July 7 against ships carrying oil from the region. These were not accidents or isolated incidents. They were direct challenges to the core promise of safe passage written into the agreement.

When the United States responded with strikes on Iranian military assets, Tehran escalated again. Iranian forces launched missiles and drones at U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait. Sirens sounded across those countries. The regime claimed it hit dozens of targets and even downed an American drone. These were not defensive moves. They were retaliation for enforcement of the very deal Iran had signed.

Throughout the period, Iranian officials and state media accused the United States of violations while ignoring their own actions against shipping and their continued support for proxy fighting in Lebanon. The pattern is familiar. The regime makes commitments, then uses the pause to regroup, test boundaries, and blame everyone else when caught. This time the test came with attacks on international shipping lanes critical to global energy flows.

Trump called it exactly what it was. At the NATO summit in Ankara on July 8, he stated plainly that the memorandum was over as far as he was concerned. He described the Iranian leadership as scum, sick people led by sick people, vicious and violent, and liars who cannot be trusted. He noted that if they ever obtained a nuclear weapon they would use it. Negotiators could keep talking if they wanted, but he saw it as a waste of time.

America’s Response

The United States did not posture or issue empty warnings. Central Command executed targeted strikes against Iranian air defense systems, radars, coastal facilities, and Revolutionary Guard naval assets, including dozens of small boats used for harassment in the strait. These were not symbolic. They imposed real costs for attacking civilian shipping in an international waterway.

At the same time, the administration revoked the temporary oil sales waiver that had been granted under the MOU framework. Economic pressure returned immediately. Trump made clear that reimposing a full naval blockade remained an option if needed. The message was consistent with America First principles: protect freedom of navigation, deter aggression against U.S. forces and allies, and refuse to reward bad faith with concessions.

Trump also signaled he is prepared to finish the job if the regime continues down this path. He has referenced the ability to strike energy infrastructure and other high-value targets. The goal remains preventing Iran from ever fielding a nuclear weapon while degrading its capacity to threaten the region and global energy markets.

What Happens Next

The ceasefire phase is finished. The next stage will feature sustained pressure rather than endless talks while the regime cheats. Iran will likely attempt more asymmetric responses — additional shipping harassment, proxy attacks, or attempts to close the strait again. Those moves will meet stronger American and allied responses.

Trump has options that do not require a full-scale ground invasion. Precision strikes can continue to degrade Iranian military and nuclear-related capabilities. Economic isolation can tighten further. Coordination with Israel and Gulf partners can increase. The president has already shown he will not tolerate attacks on commercial vessels or U.S. positions without consequence.

The regime’s fundamental weakness remains. Decades of mismanagement, corruption, and ideological rigidity have left Iran economically brittle and militarily vulnerable to sustained air and naval pressure. Every escalation they choose only accelerates the day when their ability to project power collapses.

Trump’s approach is straightforward. He offered a path out through the MOU. Iran chose violation and escalation instead. Now the United States will respond with the strength and clarity the situation demands. The mullahs can keep lying to themselves and the world. Reality is coming for them either way. The only question left is how much more damage they force on themselves before they finally accept they cannot win this confrontation.
