Recent polling shows the Democratic Party’s favorability stuck in negative territory. The public is not buying what the party has been selling on crime, borders, and the progressive left’s cultural priorities.
The Hard Numbers
Civiqs tracking as of early August 2026 puts Democratic Party favorability at 31 percent favorable and 59 percent unfavorable. That is a net of minus 28 points. YouGov’s longer-running tracker has shown similar weakness, with favorable ratings in the low-to-mid 40s and unfavorable in the mid-to-high 50s for much of the year. Aggregates from Decision Desk HQ and other trackers place the party roughly 13 to 16 points underwater on net favorability in recent surveys.
These are not one-off results. The pattern has held across multiple pollsters. Both parties are unpopular by historical standards, but the Democratic brand has failed to recover the kind of durable positive image that once defined it. Independents in particular remain skeptical. The intensity of unfavorable views is high, which matters more than raw percentages when turnout and enthusiasm enter the picture.

What the Public Is Rejecting
The numbers track with public rejection of the party’s most visible progressive experiments. “Defund the police” and its softer variants never commanded majority support. Cities that reduced enforcement or tolerated disorder paid for it in rising crime and public backlash. Open-borders rhetoric and sanctuary policies produced visible disorder, strained social services, and a political liability that Democrats have never fully shaken. Voters notice when their streets feel less safe and when illegal crossings dominate the news for years.
The rise of DSA-aligned candidates and the party’s reluctance to draw clear lines against the furthest left positions have reinforced the perception that Democrats are more interested in ideological purity than in governing results. Polling on specific issues continues to show majorities favoring more police, not fewer, and enforcement of immigration law, not its nullification. When the party’s most energetic activists push the opposite, the brand suffers.

Generic Ballot Versus Brand Damage
Generic congressional ballot numbers sometimes look better for Democrats than the favorability numbers. That is common in midterm environments when the party out of full power benefits from opposition energy. Favorability measures something deeper: whether voters actually like the party and trust it. A party can lead a generic ballot while still carrying heavy brand baggage that limits its ceiling and makes individual candidates radioactive in competitive districts.
The current data shows a party that has not repaired the damage from years of association with soft-on-crime experiments, uncontrolled migration, and cultural radicalism. Those associations are not invented by opponents. They are the product of real policy choices and real activist pressure that the party’s leadership has repeatedly failed to confront.
Voters are not confused. They see the results on the ground and the rhetoric that produced them. The favorability numbers reflect that judgment. Until Democrats demonstrate they have abandoned the positions that put them underwater, the numbers are unlikely to turn around.
