Elon Just Ordered Up the Biggest Factory America Has Ever Seen

Elon Musk does not do modest. Tesla and SpaceX have locked in plans for Terafab, a semiconductor megafactory in Grimes County, Texas, that will dwarf every building on the planet. Musk himself called it “the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far” and said the completed complex will be 50 times the size of the Pentagon. The first phase alone carries a $16.8 billion price tag. This is not another Gigafactory. This is an attempt to manufacture the chips that power the next industrial revolution under one roof.

What Terafab Actually Is

Terafab is a vertically integrated chip fabrication complex. It will combine logic production, memory, advanced packaging, and testing in a single massive facility—something the semiconductor industry almost never does at this scale. The goal is to produce more than one terawatt of AI compute capacity every year. That is far beyond what the entire global chip industry currently delivers.

The chips are not for sale to the highest bidder. They are for Musk’s own empire. Roughly a quarter of the output is expected to feed Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots, Cybercab robotaxis, and Full Self-Driving systems. The rest is earmarked for space-based AI data centers and radiation-hardened processors that SpaceX intends to put into orbit on solar-powered satellites. The companies have been clear: current and projected global chip supply cannot meet their combined demand. Terafab is the answer.

A smaller research and pilot fab is already under construction at Gigafactory Texas in Austin to test processes and iterate designs quickly. The full-scale plant sits on thousands of acres in rural Grimes County northwest of Houston.

The Scale

The finished manufacturing space is planned at more than 100 million square feet. That is roughly 15 times the floor area of the Pentagon and several times larger than the current record-holder for largest building on Earth. Musk’s “50 times the Pentagon” line points to the full multi-phase vision. Either way, nothing like it has been built. Comparisons to Gigafactory Texas, Apple Park, or the Mall of America are almost comical by comparison.

Timeline and Money

Civil work and foundation preparation are starting essentially now. Main construction is expected within months. The initial $16.8 billion phase is targeted to ramp production in the 2028–2029 window. Volume output from the research fab is aimed at 2027. Full build-out of the 100-million-plus-square-foot complex and the one-terawatt compute target stretches into the early 2030s across multiple phases. Earlier regulatory filings sketched total investment ranging from $55 billion to $119 billion or more as capacity expands.

Phase one is projected to create about 3,000 permanent jobs. Local tax agreements with school districts have been signed, clearing the final major local hurdles.

Why It Matters

America has spent years watching critical chip capacity migrate overseas. Musk is betting that vertical integration, domestic production, and sheer scale can close the gap for the technologies that will define the next decade—autonomous machines, humanoid labor, and orbital compute. If Terafab delivers even a fraction of the promised output, it becomes a strategic industrial asset of the first order. If the timelines slip or the technology hurdles prove steeper than expected, it will still be one of the most ambitious manufacturing projects ever attempted on U.S. soil.

Musk has never been accused of thinking small. Terafab is the proof.
