Maggie Litz Domanowski sits on the Baltimore County school board. Over the weekend she shared a Peanuts panel—Linus with a sign: if you think MAGA is coming for women’s rights, you should learn about Sharia. She typed “not wrong.” By Tuesday night she was at the board table saying she was truly sorry, that hearing the voices and seeing the faces made her understand, and that she would accept an invitation to visit a mosque so she could learn about the community “more than just” the law she had named.
That is the punishment in 2026 Maryland: delete, confess, schedule the field trip. Resignation was the other menu item if she refused.
How is a group designated a domestic terrorist organization allowed to wield this power?

What She Said
She did not draft a statute. She did not ban a prayer rug. She pointed at a comparison every sentient adult has already made in a comment section. American progressives treat a Republican platform as The Handmaid’s Tale. In a long list of countries that write Islamic jurisprudence into family and criminal codes, women do not get the same deal on testimony, inheritance, divorce, guardianship, dress, or the price of leaving. Iran still beats women for hair. Afghanistan put the universities back in the dark. That is not a stereotype invented on Facebook. That is a legal culture with a body count and a morality police.
She later allowed that a meme can be read as “all Muslims equal that code,” which is sloppy. Most American Muslims are not running a hudud court in Towson. The activists who came to the microphone treated the distinction as irrelevant. Naming the doctrine was the crime. The doctrine itself was a “false narrative.”
What They Did to Her
Monday: demand letter. Take it down. Apologize. Affirm the dignity of every student. Or resign. She pulled the post.
Tuesday: the meeting becomes a struggle session with better lighting. Public comment, elected officials, the professional grievance circuit. Then the apology, then the pilgrimage booking. Nobody needed a statute. The board room is a small town. You can keep your seat if you perform.
If she had posted that Orthodox Jewish family law is tough on women in a custody fight, she would have been booked on a panel about “reproductive justice.” If she had said MAGA is theocracy, she would have been brave. Islam is the one file that comes with a chaperone.

Is This a Takeover?
Baltimore County is not installing qadis in the high school. What got installed is a rule: you may fear the people who won an election; you may not fear a legal tradition that, where it is state power, is harder on women than anything in the GOP platform. The rule is enforced by embarrassment, not by a caliph.
That is still a kind of conquest. Not of the courthouse. Of the permission structure. A school-board member is now on record that the problem was her cartoon, not the codes that put men in charge of women’s legal personhood in a dozen capitals. She will tour a mosque. The women in Tehran do not get a tour. They get a van.
Most people looking at the sign would say the same thing she did: if your nightmare is American conservatism taking the vote from your daughter, you have not looked at the actual systems that already do it. That view is now an HR violation in a Maryland school district. The takeover is not Sharia in the statute book. It is the veto over who is allowed to notice.
