Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island has spent years lecturing the country on systemic racism and equity. In 2026 he turned that same language on the Department of Homeland Security, accusing ICE recruitment materials of deploying “white nationalist slogans, songs, and imagery.” He demanded answers about whether the agency had been “infiltrated by violent extremists.” The charge is serious. The messenger is not.
The Beach Club Problem
Whitehouse’s family has long been tied to Bailey’s Beach Club—formally the Spouting Rock Beach Association—in Newport. The private, invitation-only club sits on one of the most exclusive stretches of Rhode Island coastline. Whitehouse transferred his own shares to his wife years ago and insists he is not personally a member. His wife remains one of the largest shareholders. Family members continue to use the club.
In 2021 a local reporter confronted him about the club’s demographics. Whitehouse appeared to accept the premise that it lacked non-white members, saying the people running it were “still working on that” and that he was “sorry it hasn’t happened yet.” He later walked it back, claiming the club does have diversity and that improving it remains a priority. The club itself issued a statement calling the “all-white” characterization “inaccurate and false,” asserting its members include people of many racial, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. Membership lists are private. No independent public verification of the club’s current demographics has been produced. The controversy has resurfaced periodically, including in 2026 when FBI Director Kash Patel needled Whitehouse about it.
Private clubs are legal. They can set their own rules. What is not legal is the selective moralizing. Whitehouse built a political brand around fighting “systemic” exclusion while his own family’s long-standing institution faced repeated, unanswered questions about who actually gets through the gate.
The DHS Accusation
In February and again in June 2026, Whitehouse sent letters to DHS leadership attacking ICE recruitment campaigns. He cited social-media posts and ads that used phrases such as “America for Americans,” “Which way, American man?”, and song lyrics he linked to white-nationalist circles. He claimed these materials, combined with lowered hiring standards, risked attracting extremists and turning ICE into a “white supremacist militia.” The timing coincided with the Trump administration’s push to expand border enforcement and deportations.

Whitehouse framed ordinary patriotic language and enforcement messaging as coded racism. He demanded internal reviews and accountability for anyone responsible for the ads. This is the same senator whose family club has spent years under a cloud of exclusivity questions that he once seemed to acknowledge.
The Hypocrisy
Progressive politicians of Whitehouse’s vintage have perfected the art of racial accusation as political weapon. When the target is border security or law enforcement, almost any traditional American image can be labeled “white supremacist.” When the institution in question is an old-money Newport beach club connected to their own family, the standard suddenly softens into private tradition and ongoing “work.” The pattern is consistent: one set of rules for the people, another for the protected class of elite Democrats.
Whitehouse is not a white supremacist. He is a wealthy progressive who lives in the world of exclusive clubs while preaching equity to everyone else. His attack on DHS recruitment is not a serious national-security concern; it is an attempt to smear immigration enforcement with the same language he once applied more carefully to his own social circle. The beach-club record shows the difference between genuine concern and convenient rhetoric. Taxpayers and voters are entitled to notice.
