Friday the President said the United States now has permanent control over security — and “all other needs” — in Greenland. No cost to us. Infinite life. Adversaries never get a base, a garrison, or a sensitive investment without our written say-so. We start building a larger military footprint immediately. Denmark’s prime minister said the same paper recognizes Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to decide their own political future. Both of them can be describing the same document. One of them is selling a purchase. The other is selling a lock on the door.
The text is not out. They say they sign it next week in New York. Until then, this is what the briefers will admit and what the map already knew.

What the Deal Does
Greenland is not a country. It is a self-governing pile of ice and rock under the Danish crown, sitting on the shortest bomber path between Russia and the American homeland. We have been there since the Cold War. Pituffik — the old Thule field — still watches missiles and space. A 1951 pact already let us fly, land, base, and operate. Most of the old camps went dark. China started sniffing mines and ports. Russia started treating the Arctic like a driveway.
The new paper, as described by our side, does three things the 1951 deal did not shout:
First, it says non-NATO countries do not get a base or a troop presence. That is China and Russia, named without being named.
Second, it puts a screen on “sensitive” money. Ports, rare earths, dual-use infrastructure — the kind of checkbook that turns a fishing village into a listening post.
Third, it is written to outlive moods. Not tied to the lifespan of an alliance communiqué. Permanent access, basing, overflight. We can add sites as we decide we need them. Officers have already been walking old runways. Narsarsuaq in the south was on the survey list this week.
What it does not do is transfer the island. No stars on a flag. No purchase price. The people who live there keep the right to vote themselves more independence if they ever get tired of Copenhagen. That was Denmark’s price for not turning this into a NATO divorce.

Who Is Responsible for What
Washington: security veto, new construction, the right to treat the place as part of the North American defense area. The president says we work with Greenlanders on the building. He also says it costs us nothing. Concrete is not free. “No cost” means we are not writing Copenhagen a check for the dirt. We will still pay for hangars, radars, fuel, and the men who freeze in them.
Copenhagen: the flag, the sovereignty line, the parliamentary ratification. If the Folketing or Nuuk’s legislature balks, Friday’s post is a trailer.
Nuuk: local consent theater and the minerals. They want development without becoming a province of anybody. They got a sentence about self-determination. We got the padlock on who else can buy the harbor.
What It Means for Defense
Look at a globe from the top. Greenland is not a punchline. It is the cap on the GIUK gap, the missile-warning high ground, and the place you do not want a Chinese crane company owning the only deep water for a thousand miles. Arctic routes are opening. The other team noticed first. A Space Force radar in the northwest is necessary. It is not sufficient if the south and the east are for sale.
Reopening Cold War fields is not nostalgia. It is range, recovery, and eyes. If Iran and the missile clubs have taught anything this year, it is that warning time is a weapon. So is denying the other guy a dock.
The honest limit: a veto on paper is only as good as the next inspection. China does not need a red star on a barracks. It needs a thirty-year lease on a port and a satellite dish that looks like a weather station. The investment screen is the part that matters more than the parade. If it is real, Peking builds in Africa. If it is a press release, they build in Nuuk with a Danish lawyer.
He threatened to take the island. He got a lock instead of a deed. For anyone who cares about the polar approaches more than the cable chyron, the lock is the point. Annexation was always a tantrum that would have blown the alliance to get a rock we already used. This is the grown-up version: we do not own Greenland. Nobody who wishes us harm gets to rent it. That is a defense agreement. The rest is a caption. Wait for the signatures. Then count the runways.
