Trump Sent the Cavalry. The Body Count Noticed.

A year ago Memphis was the poster. Highest violent-crime rate in the country in 2024. Highest property-crime rate too. Murder that beat the usual suspects. A 344 percent premium over the national average if you liked ugly math. On September 15, 2025, he signed the memo. The Memphis Safe Task Force showed up at the end of that month — hundreds of federal agents, the state Guard, local cops who had been drowning. One year later the city is not a postcard. It is quieter. The ledger is why.

The Crime Drop, in Numbers

Year to date against last year, as posted this month: overall crime down nearly 36 percent. Murder down 36 percent. Sexual assault down 28. Car theft down 57. Robbery down 42. Shoplifting down 44. Aggravated assault down 26. Shelby County: violent crime down more than 30, major property crime down more than 40. On pace for a 25-year low in overall crime.

Homicide is the number people feel. In 2025 the city finished under 200 murders for the first time since 2019 — a 26 percent drop from 2024 on top of a 28 percent drop in overall crime that same year. The slide started before the convoy. After the convoy it kept sliding. Through mid-June this year: 62 murders versus 110 at the same point last year. First-half murder down 44 percent in one local briefing. A year to the day from the launch: 96 murders versus 149 in the same window the year before. Pace for 2026 is in the mid-130s if the line holds.

Neighborhoods that used to make the evening news: Raleigh, one murder this year against 11 last year. Frayser, eight against 24. Clearance on homicides now cited at 81 percent. In 2023 it was 40. That is not a vibe. That is a detective with a suspect instead of a candlelight vigil.

What They Actually Cuffed

As of mid-September the task force count: 12,747 arrests. Of those: 131 for homicide. 1,363 narcotics. 1,276 firearms violations. 125 sex offenses. 1,408 listed as known gang members. Guns off the street: 2,160. Missing children found: 189.

By June they had already crossed 10,000 arrests and 1,700 guns, cut the warrant pile from about 10,000 to about 5,000, and were averaging roughly 40 arrests and 10 firearms a day. That is not a patrol waving at tourists. That is a factory.

Did the Surge Do It?

Crime was already falling in 2024 and through most of 2025. Staffing, state money, and a chief who stopped treating homicide as weather get a share. National murder came down in a lot of cities that never saw a Humvee. The people who hate the Guard will stop the tape in August 2025 and call the rest a coincidence.

Then look at the second derivative. Local brass said the drop was running around 27 percent and then went to 40 after the feds arrived. A marshal on the ground said the trend was down and the task force “escalated the decrease.” You can argue about regression. You cannot argue 12,700 arrests into a void. You cannot argue 2,100 illegal guns in a vault. You cannot argue a warrant backlog cut in half. If the city was healing anyway, it healed faster with more handcuffs.

The Honest Limit

Memphis is not Mayberry. A mid-130s murder year is still a war zone by the standards of a normal American city. The Guard costs real money. Some of the arrests are street clutter. Immigration raids on a club make for a different argument than a homicide warrant. None of that erases the year-over-year columns.

He promised a city that had been surrendered. He sent the Marshals, the agents, and the Guard. A year later murder is down by a third on the official card, cars stay on driveways, and the people who used to measure the night in shots fired are measuring it in a percentage. That is the result. Print the 12,747. Print the 36 percent. Print the 96 versus 149. Then ask the next mayor whether he wants the factory to stay on or go back to the candlelight.
