The Left Never Stops Eyeing Your Funeral

The Renewed Death Tax Grab Is Back

They taxed your income. They taxed your investments. They taxed your business growth. Now the same crowd wants one last bite after you are gone. The “death tax” talk faded for a while under smarter policies, but the left is circling again with fresh proposals to seize family wealth at the moment of greatest grief.

This is not about fairness. It is about power and envy. They could not confiscate enough while the wealth creators were alive, so they are coming for the next generation.

The New Wave of Proposals

In recent months, prominent Democrats have dusted off old ideas and dressed them up as solutions to inequality or Social Security shortfalls. One measure would slash the federal estate tax exemption dramatically — down to levels that would hit far more middle-class and upper-middle-class families than the current setup. Another pushes an annual tax on large trusts to force earlier payments and close what they call loopholes for “dynastic wealth.”

California’s governor has gone further, openly calling for a national “billionaires tax” alongside higher estate taxes and a rewrite of inheritance rules. He frames the coming wave of family wealth transfers as some kind of threat to democracy that must be stopped by government seizure. New York City’s mayor has floated slashing his state’s exemption threshold by nearly 90 percent while jacking the top rate up to 50 percent.

These are not fringe ideas anymore. They are being pushed by people with real power in blue states and by members of Congress looking to fund bigger government. The common thread is simple: punish success, redistribute what others built, and expand state control over private capital.

How the Death Tax Actually Works — and Why It Is Immoral

The estate tax is double taxation, plain and simple. The money being passed on was already taxed when it was earned as income, when it was invested and produced gains, and often when businesses paid corporate-level taxes. Then the government shows up at the reading of the will and demands another cut.

That is not justice. It is theft dressed in moral language.

Family businesses and farms get hit hardest. Many are asset-rich but cash-poor. When the founder dies, heirs often have to sell off land, equipment, or the company itself just to pay the tax bill. The result is consolidation into bigger corporate hands or outright liquidation. The people who actually built and ran these operations get wiped out so politicians can brag about “closing loopholes.”

The current higher exemption levels — put in place by smarter tax policy — protect most families from this nightmare. Lowering them again would drag millions more into the system and turn death into a taxable event on a massive scale.

The Real Goal Is Control, Not Revenue

Proponents claim this is about funding programs or fixing deficits. That is nonsense. The estate tax has never been a major revenue source for the federal government. It is a rounding error in the budget. The real purpose is ideological.

The left hates concentrated private wealth because it represents independence from the state. Wealthy families can fund their own education, healthcare choices, and political views without begging government for permission or subsidies. Breaking up that wealth through death taxes weakens that independence and grows reliance on Washington.

It also fits the broader pattern: tax the productive while alive, then tax whatever is left when they die. Add in calls for wealth taxes on unrealized gains and you see the full picture — a system designed to punish anyone who builds something lasting.

Newsom’s talk of preventing a “permanent American aristocracy” is pure projection. The real aristocracy is the political class that lives off other people’s money and uses the tax code as a weapon. Families that build businesses over generations are not the problem. They are the backbone.

What This Means for Regular Americans

Most people will never pay the federal estate tax under current rules. But lowering exemptions changes that fast. Small businesses, family farms, and even upper-middle-class households with homes, retirement accounts, and life insurance can suddenly face six- or seven-figure tax bills.

That money does not disappear into some neutral fund. It funds more government spending, more bureaucracy, and more programs that crowd out private initiative. Every dollar taken at death is a dollar that cannot stay in the family business, cannot be reinvested, and cannot create the next round of jobs and innovation.

The left frames opposition as protecting billionaires. In reality, these taxes hit the people who actually create the wealth — entrepreneurs, farmers, and business owners — and destroy the incentive to build anything that lasts beyond one lifetime.

The Path Forward

Republicans have already moved to protect families with higher exemptions and repeal efforts. Those protections need to be locked in permanently. Any attempt to lower exemptions or add new annual trust taxes must be fought as the wealth destruction it is.

Voters should demand candidates take a clear stand: no death tax on family businesses and farms. No double taxation at the moment of loss. The wealth you create belongs to you and your heirs, not to politicians who never earned it.

The left will keep coming back. They always do. Every time they lose ground on income taxes or regulations, they pivot to the death tax because it feels like a final, unanswerable grab. It is not. It is just another tax on success dressed up as compassion.

America was built by people who took risks and built things that outlasted them. Punishing that impulse at the grave does not create equality. It creates stagnation, forces sales to big players, and tells every ambitious American that the government gets the last word on what you leave behind.

That is not the country we should be. It is time to bury the death tax once and for all — before it buries more family legacies.
