It’s the greatest lie the Washington establishment ever told—that an apolitical, impartial federal bureaucracy expertly controls the levers of government for the benefit of the American people.

Elon Musk and the DOGE team, at the direction of President Trump, are busting this myth. And they’re doing it for all Americans to see.

Musk and team are rooting out wasteful bureaucratic spending. In the process, they are exposing just how much the bureaucracy works for itself and not for “We, the People.”

The origins of today’s bureaucracy go back over a hundred years, when those in charge worried that the modern world had become too complex to manage. With the New Deal of the 1930s, the administrative state as we know it today began to take shape. What’s become entrenched in the decades since is government by “expert”—the supposedly selfless public servants who use their specialized knowhow to solve the problems of society.

We now have a mass of unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats setting policies, making decisions, and adjudicating disputes. Even worse, this bureaucracy thinks of itself as an independent arm of government—separate from and unresponsive to the President or his politically accountable appointees.

Such a vast federal bureaucracy is nowhere to be found in the Constitution. It isn’t how the Founders envisioned our system of government. The administrative state as it exists today violates our core founding principles of separation of powers and limited government.

Don’t get me wrong. There are well-meaning people working in our federal agencies. We are a patriotic nation, and many Americans are called to service on behalf of our country.

But for every public employee who serves for the right reason, there is an Anthony Fauci or a Lois Lerner—bureaucrats who abuse their official authority for personal aggrandizement or partisan advantage. For every nonpolitical new hire, there are people like the 51 former intelligence officials who traded on their specialized national security credentials to publicly mislead Americans weeks before a presidential election.

And while individual bureaucrats may be well-intentioned, the bureaucracy as an institution is always out for itself.

Just take spending. A federal agency is incentivized to spend as much money as it can so that it can come back to Congressional appropriators and justify a higher budget the next year. Inevitably, in its push to spend, the agency will dole out taxpayer money on wasteful and unnecessary projects.

President Trump and Elon Musk are rightly exposing this waste. It’s an issue on which President Trump campaigned and it’s one reason why 77 million Americans elected him.

But what’s really revealing is the degree to which the bureaucracy, the Democrats, and the Washington establishment oppose President Trump’s work to end this grift.

Instead of working with Musk to stop the irresponsible spending, Democrats and bureaucrats are attacking the guy who is exposing it.

Democrats and bureaucrats are upset that the DOGE team has access to Americans’ sensitive data. But the DOGE team members are federal employees, just like the bureaucrats who regularly access this data. Democrats aren’t upset that the bureaucracy collects and maintains this mountain of information—they’re mad that President Trump’s appointees are using it to identify and stop waste, fraud, and abuse.

Elon Musk is busting through the pork and the red tape as only he can. He is exposing the myth of the nonpartisan federal bureaucracy. We should be thankful that he is.

This is the same guy who popularized the electric car. The guy who is revolutionizing space flight. The guy who saved the First Amendment online. Now, for the benefit of the country, Musk has turned his considerable skills to fixing our broken administrative state.

Musk’s mission is simply to make our government work better. And for some reason Democrats, bureaucrats, and the Washington establishment are fighting to maintain the fraud and the waste. You have to wonder why.
