A handful of House Democrats and candidates—reports put the number around 13 to 15 total, with roughly 10 sitting members—signed onto a centrist “Promise to America” pledge declaring they are capitalists, not socialists. They affirmed support for secure borders, public safety, fiscal discipline, and pride in the country while rejecting the politics of purity and cultural division. The effort came after a string of Democratic Socialists of America-backed primary victories that toppled incumbents and expanded the socialist footprint in deep-blue districts.
That low turnout is the story. In a caucus of more than 200 members, a group this small stepping forward to draw a clear line against the DSA reveals how little organized resistance exists inside the House Democratic conference. The establishment is not fighting. It is mostly staying quiet or managing the damage.

What the Numbers Actually Show
The pledge was never a formal floor resolution with a forced vote. It was a voluntary statement by moderates and candidates in competitive or Trump-won districts who understand that open association with abolish-the-police, open-borders, and anti-capitalist rhetoric is electoral poison outside the safest seats. Their willingness to put their names on paper is notable. The near-total absence of the rest of the caucus is more notable.
Separately, a formal House concurrent resolution denouncing the “horrors of socialism” and opposing socialist policies in the United States did pass, with 86 Democrats voting yes. That larger number shows many Democrats will still vote against the word when the alternative is being labeled soft on failed ideology. It does not show a party prepared to confront the organized socialist faction winning its own primaries.

The DSA’s Actual Position
The Democratic Socialists of America have not seized the party’s institutional levers—committee chairs, leadership posts, or the national committee. What they have done is prove they can primary and defeat mainstream Democrats in heavily Democratic districts. New York delivered multiple examples. Colorado added another. Local and state races have followed the same pattern. The activist base, the young progressive voters, and the online left are increasingly aligned with DSA priorities or comfortable with its candidates.
DSA’s platform is not subtle: public ownership of major industries, abolition or severe restriction of policing and prisons, open borders in practice, and structural changes that would gut the Senate and traditional separation of powers. When candidates who share that worldview keep winning Democratic nominations, the party’s brand shifts whether leadership likes it or not.
Control Versus Momentum
Full control requires more than primary wins in safe seats. It requires the ability to dictate national messaging, force policy priorities, and survive general elections in places that decide majorities. The DSA has not cleared that bar. Competitive-district Democrats still exist and still fear the association. Party leaders continue to talk about a big tent while carefully avoiding direct confrontation that would split the coalition.
Yet momentum matters. When only a tiny fraction of the House caucus is willing to say out loud that socialists do not speak for the party, the socialists gain ground by default. Silence from the majority is a form of consent. Primary voters in blue strongholds have already delivered their verdict. The broader electorate has not, and that is where the risk sits.
The Democratic Party has not been formally captured by the DSA. It has been successfully infiltrated and intimidated in the places that produce most of its members of Congress. Ten or fifteen signatures on a centrist letter do not reverse that reality. They underline it. The left is not yet in total control. It is winning the only fights that currently count inside the party—the primaries.
